How Mid-State replaced an aging ice tank cooling system with new Carrier air-cooled chillers to improve reliability for a 125,000 sq. ft. school.
How Mid-State replaced a broken ice tank system with 500 tons of air-cooled chiller capacity during summer break.
Overview
Quest Elementary School in Brevard County serves 54 classrooms across a 125,000 sq. ft. campus. The school's outdated ice tank cooling system had become nonfunctional and was no longer viable for repair.
Challenge
The aging ice tank system had broken down and needed complete removal. Replacement equipment and piping work had to be finished before students returned in the fall.
Our Solution
Mid-State Mechanical Contractors planned and executed the replacement during the summer break, which allowed the team to complete the work without disrupting school activity. The two new 250-ton Carrier air-cooled chillers were set in place with precision. Piping was modified and extended to accommodate the new equipment layout, and all final connections were completed with performance and service access in mind. Once mechanical work was complete, the system was commissioned and integrated into the school’s controls. Entering and leaving water temperatures are now monitored continuously to support proper operation and help maintenance staff identify any performance concerns quickly. This upgrade established a reliable cooling platform for the campus and set the stage for planned phase-two improvements, which will include new pumps and additional piping enhancements.
Results
• Two new Carrier chillers providing 500 tons of cooling capacity • Complete removal of broken ice tank system • Temperature monitoring controls commissioned • Work completed during the Summer to prevent school disruption • Phase two pump and piping upgrades scheduled for next summer
